Now it is time to PLAN. Planning means having a "goal" and outlining the steps to obtain it.
You should ask yourself
- What motivates you to travel ?
- What do you desire to "feel" by exposing yourself to different environments?
- What are the effects that you want to experience ?
- How much of your energy / time are you willing to invest or waste in that experience ? This involves the energy / time to produce the "vouchers" and the time / energy to actually invest in the "moving" experience.
- What is the end product that you want to obtain as a result of your investment ?
- Which places will be more suitable to find the kind of effects that you want to obtain ? If you want a broad menu of effects then you should not repeat similar environments that will most likely produce similar effects. Example: most South Asian counties share similar environments, most Latin American countries have similar environments. Your should choose the one that offers the richest experience according to your desired effects. Example. Mexico would offer the richest experience of all Latin American countries. It has most of the things others have and more, except for landmarks like Machu Pichu or Iguzu falls But it has real worth while archeology and Agua Azul in Chiapas are breathtaking cascades + Mexico has some of the best beaches in the world. Turkey is the best option to experience the middle eastern architecture, food + lots of variants. etc.
- Or maybe you desire to experience only one kind of effects , then choose to circuit similar environments that will expose you to a certain culture but each one will also offer its particular - unique sites. Example : Circuit the Polineasia Hawaii included. Or circuit Latin America. Circuit of South Asia. Even similar environments will offer some "unique" site. Cambodia hs Ankor, Thailand offers its Royal Palace, Vietnam the river landscape, etc.
- How do you like to live while in the "move". If you are picky you have to stay at hotels. If you are easy going you can stay at peoples homes. ( Never like today it has been easier to make contacts via Internet) As everything in life it is a matter of exchange. You may "exchange" your room and board for chores or later by hosting the people that once hosted you.
- Do the desired effects exist in your own environment and you are not taking advantage of it ? Are you going to "pay" big bucks for something that comes for free or for less near you ?
- Are you seeking personal growth by exposing you to unknown challenges?
- Are you disattached enough in order to really enjoy leaving even temporarily?
- Are you looking forward to settle in a foreign land ?
- Are you ready to give up your actual homeland and dear ones ?
Most of us "travelers" keep few memories of what we experienced while traveling. ( that is the reason we take photos) Most of the time our "special" souvenirs refers to very simple things and not the OVERWHELMING sensations experienced while exposed to landmarks. Those sensations are very temporary , the ones that rest are the simple things. The food at a certain restaurant. The cozyness of the pub . The bazaar experience. The taste of special wine in a French winery. The picnic by the riverside. The stroll in the park. The cabin in the woods. The magnificent tree. The chant of the mosques. The "taco" stand. The farmers market. etc.
And not to mention all the bad memories that each and every "move" produces. Sleeping at the airport or filthy bus station, stolen wallets and docs, being ripped off by dishonest tour operators or taxi drivers , the anguish of not being able to make it all the way, the frustration of not being able to afford something we really would want to buy, public toilets, etc.
I have heard this from some tour operators offering eco-adventure-tours.
We are in the business of SADO-tourism catering to maso- tourists that pay for not being as comfortable as home.
ENJOY !
